Vegetative rods of myxobacteria on an agar surface, moving with their characteristic gliding motility.

At low cell density one can follow the movement of the individual cells. Typically, the cells, which are about 7µm long, move at a speed of about 1-2µm/min. The mechanism of gliding motility is unknown.

For more detailed information about gliding motility see"motility".
