What are the Myxobacteria?

The myxobacteria are a group of gram negative eubacteria, belonging to the delta group of the proteobacteria.

They were originally isolated in 1892 by Roland Thaxter who recognized them as a distinct and unusual group of bacteria.

   

 

 

 Thaxter cultured and described many of the myxobacteria in a series of papers that remain a testimony to his microbiological acuity.
